Letter to Holly from Chubbs, January 2014
What happened to you, Holly? The house is so quiet, you are not here to clean my dish when I leave food. You are not here to help me wake up Mom in the morning. Mom says now I am in charge. I tried to be in charge before, but you were always the one in charge around here. Even when I tried to groom you, wash your face or paws, you would walk away, leaving me with a puzzled look on my face. Your tracks are still in the backyard snow, soon to be covered by more snow, I miss you.
Sometimes you would come in from outside and give me a cold sloppy kiss. You smelled so good when you came home from your walk at the river. I could smell all the places you had been and the dogs you had played with. You met lots of friends on those walks, they will all miss you and ask where you are. Mom and Dad remember when you were so hard to walk and hold onto when you saw another dog. Your first years with them were tough. Aimee took you to Doggie Day Care quite often. You would come home exhausted. Then Aimee got Maya. At first you and she were friends, but one day you became afraid of Maya and the friendship ended.
When I came to live with you, I loved you immediately. But at first I was scared in my new home. I had been adopted as a kitten with a puppy. We were best friends and grew up together. He taught me to sit and and beg just like he did. I learned to love dogs and thought I was one. Then one day he was gone and I was alone for a couple years. Living with you brought back my fond dog memories.
Then Rudy got Pepper, what fun. I had a puppy to wrestle with again. You liked her too and would play with her and race around the yard in circles. But you were always the top dog in charge. I miss you.
Mom says no more dogs, but I know she will weaken. Some dog will find her. But it will have to be a dog that likes me. Because you know, I am in charge now. I will see you again someday when I cross that Rainbow Bridge and look for you.
Holly died on January 22, 2014 peacefully at home. She was about 8 yrs old and was adopted at the Blue Earth Nicollet Humane Society on Feb. 7, 2007. They called her Holly Berry and their ad said she was calm, she was anything but!
